HISTORY

You can not start this story with a ,,unce upon a time…’’ Although…. Junior High School ( called Main Public School ) functioned in Węgorzewo before the Word War I. The education was finished then with the exam for the certificate of the secondary education, called matura. In 1924 the school was located in the building of the former seminary, in today’s ‘’Jerzy Andrzej Helwing’s Park ‘’, opposite the Town Hall (photo below).

Przedwojenne Gimnazjum

In 1927 the school was named after Marshall Hindenburg. The school building was completly destroyed during the Word War II. The first inhabitants of the post-war Węgorzewo can still remember of the school’s ruins. Many years later on Pionierów Street in the place of the popular Youth Cultural Centre named ,,Stodoła’’ ( ,,The Barn’’) a construction appeared:

The Primary School Number 1 named after Niwlaus Copernicus moped into the new building on first of April 1998. The building already looked like the one the main site.

On the 1st September 1999 the building officially became the home of the Lower Secondary School in Węgorzewo. 1 September 1999 ( when we met on the second floor) the mension became the headquarters of Lower Secondary School in Węgorzewo. The media, local authorities were there along with us teachers and students. The board of teachers was small back then. We can see it on photo below:

Next day we rolled up our sleeves. Fortunately during the first month there were no failing grades. This practice survived till those days only for pupils of the first classes.

During the first year a school logo was designed by our biology teacher, Jerzy Zinkiewicz (the logo is visible on the left side). The project was selected by teachers.

Mr Zinkiewicz is also the author of our school’s anthem, he wrote the lyrics to Beethoven’s „Ode to Joy’’ which goes :

Jaką przyszłość los nam niesie
Wielką niewiadomą jest.
Uczmy się więc, chłońmy wiedzę,
Przejdźmy gimnazjalny chrzest.

Przypiąć skrzydła, dać korzenie
Szczytną misją szkoły mej.
Światły umysł, silną wolę,
Dać nam dobry Panie chciej.

Wielcy ludzie też byli w szkole,
Więc opłacił im się trud.
Siądźmy w ławce, weźmy książkę,
Zbliżmy się do światła wrót.

Our school’s patron was chosen by contest. In the first stage there were three names :

Finalny, the largest number of votes was for Jerzy Andrzej Helwing, who is directly connected with our town.
On the 20th of April 2000 our school was named after Helwing. This day became a big celebration in our school.
